Moore Park safety gets a boost, road work closures Jan-Feb 2013
7 January 2013
The Eastern Distributor and sections of South Dowling Street will be closed for bridge safety enhancements and scheduled maintenance during January and February 2013.
The work includes the installation of an anti-throw screen to the Moore Park Bridge linking Surry Hills and Moore Park. The screens will enhance the safety of motorists as well as pedestrians travelling on South Dowling Street and the Eastern Distributor.
The Eastern Distributor and South Dowling Street will be closed at nights while the work is carried out. The South Dowling Street Eastern Distributor on/off ramps located at Dacey Street and Cleveland Street will remain open during South Dowling Street closures. More information on the closures is over the page.
Additional Eastern Distributor closures are not required, as the works above the motorway will be carried out during the scheduled maintenance closures.
During the closures of South Dowling Street signposted detours will be in place and manned by traffic controllers:
• South Dowling Street northbound – Detour via Lachlan (L) to Cleveland Street (R ) via Bourke (R) with Crescent St (western end) closed to local traffic only at the intersection of Bourke/Crescent Street.
• South Dowling Street southbound - Detour via Cleveland Street (L) to Dacey Avenue (R) via Anzac Parade.
The Moore Park pedestrian bridge will also be closed each shift during the work. An alternative route for pedestrians will be available via the Charles Street footbridge. Access to the bridge will be restored at 5am each morning.
“The addition of the anti-throw screens on the Moore Park Bridge completes the installation of these screens in the motorway corridor,” said the head of Airport Motorway Limited, owner of the Eastern Distributor, Henry Byrne.
“During the last two years, screens have been added to four pedestrian bridges crossing the motorway. Working with the City of Sydney and Roads and Maritime Services, the installation of the screen to the Moore Park Bridge completes the installation across the corridor.
“The installation of the screens complements CCTV monitoring of the motorway and surveillance teams, who work 24 hours, 7 days a week to ensure the safety of motorway users.
“We thank motorists, pedestrians and the local community for their patience during the work. While some local road closures are needed, the safety of motorists and the community is our number one priority.”
The closure times have been planned to minimise any inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. No work will take place on Australia Day to avoid any impact on motorists and the community travelling to events.
